Promoting mental health of children and adolescents in LMIC thus has become a global issue with, for instance, the World Health Organization implementing a child mental health action plan ( World Health Organization, 2012). Worldwide epidemiological studies have found that around 10%−20% of children and adolescents experience mental health disorders, with those who live in low and middle income countries (LMIC) at particularly elevated risk due to the economic hardships and limited resources in LMIC ( Malhotra & Padhy, 2015). Children with mental health problems also face major challenges with stigma, social isolation and discrimination. Poor mental health in childhood has been found to be associated with problems such as school failure, delinquency and substance abuse, physical health conditions, and increased risk for poverty and other adverse adult outcomes (Jenkins et al, 2011). Mental health plays a crucial role in children’s social, emotional, cognitive development and academic success.
